Is Monitoring required?
Some form of monitoring is recommended. A well-designed and installed Solar PV system will yield many Watts of trouble-free, low maintenance, low carbon electricity, so systems can easily be forgotten about and taken for granted. It can be hard to spot a failing system, especially when the system has intermittent faults that are only showing up during specific conditions.
As such a faulty poor yielding system can continue in service for long periods with the owner being unaware of the costly losses and in some cases dangerous occurrences they may be suffering. Monitoring systems have come a long way since the early days of Solar. Almost all new inverter manufacturers offer onboard proprietary monitoring solutions that are capable of providing the operator/owner with masses of data including the facility to alert them of any faults or problems as they happen.
Solar PV testing and inspection service
We regularly come across installations where there are monitoring systems available that have simply not been enabled or set up. With the high cost of electricity, these systems can quickly be paid for by the additional uptime of the solar PV system generation. Our Solar PV testing and inspection service will identify any deficiencies in this regard and would be documented in our reports.
“PV system monitoring is desirable because it allows the system owner and the installer to review the generation and performance of a system and to pick up any potential problems.”
“Poor system performance is sometimes difficult to spot and gets more difficult on larger systems with multiple strings – where the loss of just one string can easily be missed. String level monitoring can detect such faults, but is not installed on all systems.”
